Abstract: |
Of the twenty-five papers in the volume, those with the most immediate relevance to British archaeologists are: C Segebade & G J Lutz (pp 20-49) reporting photon activation analysis of Rheinzabern samian; L Biek et al report analyses of enamels and glass pastes on RB bronzes from Nornour (Scilly) (50-79); M R Cowell, J Fergusson & M J Hughes (80-9) have found that raw flint collected from an extensive area of Grimes Graves flint mines shows compact analytical grouping differing from that of other flint zones. J Evans & L Biek (90-5) have used a comparatively simple non-destructive method for examining organic chars on potsherds. Analysis of pre-Roman Iron Age red glass is re-examined by M G Spratling (113-25) who suggests that further work might reveal different production batches. Over 7000 isoprobe analyses of silver-based coins are reported by R E M Hedges & D R Walker (156-63) while I Ahmed and V Mejdahl (177-88) report some new results from the Glozel saga, this time checking firing temperatures using Mössbauer spectroscopy. 300 Roman brooches from Richborough subjected to atomic absorption analysis (J Bayley, S Butcher & I Cross, 239-47) revealed some significant variations in composition. Material from the Gussage All Saints bronze foundry (Iron Age) has been studied by emission spectroscopy and metallography to reveal many manufacturing details (Spratling et multi alii, 268-92). A section on thermoluminescence dating includes an account of the French method DATE, a calibration method which obviates the need for dose-rate measurements (L Langouët et al, 312-24); and a method of dose rate evaluation for TL dating by fission track counting (G A Wagner, 393-402). |
