Abstract: |
Draws attention to the important role of barns in the architectural heritage of the Englishlandscape, describes their function and illustrates their historical development from 11th century through to late 17th, and discusses some alternative public or private uses to which barns may be put if necessary. It is estimated that Essex once contained over 1400 ancient barns, but no census of survivors has yet been made. |
