Combines full reports on work done 1946-57 under S S Frere's direction, and since 1976 under that of T Tatton-Brown, together with observations made in the intervening period. Roman wall and bank are contemporary, not before late 3rd century; traces of several external towers and one internal. Watling Street's Riding Gate was flanked by square guardchambers; early med timber tower postholes here. Med and Roman circuits correspond exactly. Stone-by-stone surveys of St Mary Northgate and the West Gate. DFR/Ed |
