Abstract: |
Sets out to reveal (using multidisciplinary sources) the processes of urbanization in NW Europe after the decay of Roman civilization. Emphasis is placed on the emergence, development, and abandonment of the emporia, with an examination of the socio-economic processes involved. These are fitted into the identifiable trade networks. Traders and their boats, and traded goods including bullion and currency, are considered. Rural production and intra-regional exchange, 9th century change, emergent competitive markets, and processes of change are all traced, using systems analysis and other techniques. |
