Abstract: |
A 1st century military-style ditch was found NE of the keep, recut and with (later) a street with timber buildings alongside built over the levelled rampart. A double male inhumation burial was accompanied by two 2nd century cavalry swords with fittings. Timberlined Roman (square) and Saxon (wicker-and-barrel) wells also found. A trench through the keep itself showed heavy occupation in late 11th century, unlike the bailey; pottery confirmed the documentary evidence suggesting a date after 1100 for erection. Detailed elevations, sections, and plans; very substantial pottery reports, and many reports on brooches and other metalwork, human bones, animal bones, tree-ring analyses. etc. D F R/Ed |
