Abstract:
The thirteen papers aim to explain the similarities of form between institutions, ideologies, and material remains in a variety of cultures just emerging into statehood. Imitation, competition, warfare, and the exchange of material goods and information are examined. The chapter on the European Iron Age (pp 59-68) is taken by S & T Champion and that on Anglo-Saxon England (69-78) by Richard Hodges. Richard Bradley & Robert Chapman (127-36) discuss 'The nature and development of long-distance relations in Later Neolithic Britain and Ireland', while Stephen Shennan (137-48) broadens the enquiry to 'Interaction and change in 3rd millennium BC western and central Europe'. The editors close the volume (149-58) with 'Epilogue and prospect'.
