Abstract:
Numerous 'disabling fissures running through conventional approaches' to archaeology are identified and many disciplinary practices challenged, as much in the 'New' as in the traditional archaeology. A radical programme is set out which envisages a 'critical and reflexive' archaeology in which there is no division between theoretical archaeology and practical research, and the past is explored through full consciousness of present-day frames of reference. Improvements in museum approaches are suggested, and two substantial studies (on Swedish Neo pottery, and on contemporary beer-can design in Britain and Sweden) illustrate aspects of the 're-constructed' approach.
