Abstract: |
George C Frison (5-14) provides the introductory chapter, 'Old World archaeology and archaeologists from a New World perspective'. Harold L Dibble (33-45) analyses 'Reduction sequences in the manufacture of Mousterian implements of France'; many aspects of scraper morphology reflect a continuum of reduction, so that greater reduction implies greater use. In Chapter 6, Clive Gamble (81-98) presents an intentionally speculative piece on the ecology of colonization, 'Man the shoveler: alternative models for Middle Pleistocene colonization and occupation in northern latitudes'; he discusses how and why a species extends its range, adapting to cold, locating and thawing carcases for consumption. |
