Abstract:
G C Boon provides a memoir of J M Lewis, followed by J R Kenyon's select bibliography of his writings (5-8). Jeremy Knight contributes (9-21) 'Pottery in Wales: the pre-Norman background' and B Vyner (23-37) 'Medieval and later pottery production in S Wales'. Alan Vince writes on 'Medieval pottery in the Welsh borderland'. A section on regional topics follows: Stephen Clarke (53-73) describes 'Decorated Monnow Valley ware' while Michael Ponsford (75-91) offers 'Evidence for the production of medieval pottery in the West Country c 930-c1750'. P J Davey (93-120) offers 'Further observations on a post-medieval kiln group from Pinfold Lane, Buckley' while Stephen Clarke & Reg & Philomena Jackson provide an assessment of the evidence for 'The North Gwent Potteries' (16th-17th centuries). S H Sell describes 'Post-medieval pottery from Swansea' (131-43). Topics widen out again as John Cherry (145-60) writes on 'Cauldrons and skillets: metal and pottery in cooking', while Stephen Moorhouse (161-87) offers 'The site distribution of pottery as evidence of function: a discussion and some case studies'. 'Observations on artefacts from ditch deposits' come from Stuart Wrathmell (189-97), and D H Evans (199-224) offers 'Reflections on the study of imported ceramics'. Heather & Terrence James (225-34) have studied 'Ceramic and documentary evidence for the Iberian trade with West Wales in the 15th and 16th centuries', and Eurvyn Wiliam (235-46) moves 'Towards the term "vernacular pottery"'. Peter Webster (247-52) winds up on 'Welsh pottery studies and the future'.
