Abstract: |
A wide range of sources is used to depict how medicine was practised in the Roman Empire: archaeological excavations, written sources, sculptures and other artistic productions, together with surviving surgical instruments, skeletal and plant remains. The seven chapters treat origins; fitness, food, and hygiene; physicians and their medicine; women's diseases, birth, and contraception; the surgeon and the army; gods and their magic; and dying and death. |
