Abstract: |
Results of a survey by questionnaires sent to field archaeologists and conservators in spring 1988 show the need for many improvements. Conservators tend to be highly trained but receive few facilities and little encouragement to do more than housekeep. Working relationships with field archaeologists could be improved by a better understanding of each other's roles. Storage facilities for small finds after excavation and in museums are generally poor, and the assessment of conservation backlogs presents difficult problems. Research by conservators should not be regarded as a disposable luxury; and many conservators are dissatisfied with present career structure. |
