Examines the churches with a combination of archaeological, documentary, liturgical, and architectural evidence to trace their development from St Augustine of Canterbury to the present. Included are discussions of the Roman influence on the early Church in England, the role of minsters and early monasteries, the Domesday Book period, the towns from AD 850-1100, parish formation, mottes, moats, and manors, the stylistic developments of the medieval period, periods of decay and decline, the Perpendicular style related to economic effects, the expansion of chantries, churches in the designed landscapes of 16th-17th centuries, and the 18th-19th century social and economic upheavals - Nonconformism and industrialization. |
