Abstract: |
The second of two volumes of reprints deals mainly with historical sources for the city. The original papers range from 1892 to 1965 in date but have updated bibliographies. Aubrey Gwynn (37-61) writes of 'The first bishops of Dublin' and A L Elliott (62-76) of 'The abbey of St Thomas the Martyr, near Dublin', while Charles McNeill (77-82) contributes 'Hospital of St John without the Newgate, Dublin'. 'The Dominicans in medieval Dublin' are the topic of Benedict O'Sullivan (83-99) and 'Fourteenth century life in a Dublin monastery' comes from Brian Mac Giolla Phádraig (112-22) and 'St Patrick's staff and Christ Church' from M V Ronan (123-31). R H M Dolley (135-44) contributes 'The Dublin pennies in the name of Sitric Silkbeard in the Hermitage Museum at Leningrad'. A E J Went (182-91) writes on 'Fisheries of the River Liffey' in the med period, while malodorous Dublin is captured by T K Moylan (192-9) in 'Vagabonds and sturdy beggars: poverty, pigs and pestilence in medieval Dublin'. Remaining papers treat institutions of Dublin. |
