Abstract: |
Two 17th century plans of Avebury in the Royal Society's library, previously almost overlooked, have helped to revolutionize ideas about the monument. The importance of the plans was such as to prompt the formation of an interdisciplinary team to reassess the whole of the Avebury material. The two 'new' plans are Walter Charleton's of 1663 (in some ways the least problematic of the early plans) and Aubrey's of the same date. Chapters of the book treat the antiquarian context in which these early plans, and others, were drawn up; the aims, methods, and preconceptions of the early antiquaries; a feature-by-feature analysis of the available materials; plans, perceptions and preconceptions 1660-1990; and the future of Avebury, under threat from various pressures as it now is. A major finding of the work is that Stukeley was never the neutral recorder he has been represented to be. Results of geophysical surveys of the monument are also reported, demonstrating the value of this type of non-invasive examination. |
