Abstract: |
Companion volume to John Wacher's The towns of Roman Britain (1975). General review of a category of Roman settlement that has proved hard to define. Consideration is given to origins and development, internal morphology, and identifiable functions - social, economic, protective, and administrative. Provides details of fifty-four small towns which are subdivided by morphology and functions. Separate chapters cover potential cities, minor towns, specialized sites (religious and industrial), minor defended settlements, and undefended settlements. Concludes with a brief consideration of priorities for future work on small towns. M H (For review see Times Lit Suppl, 8 Feb 1991.) |
