Abstract: |
Gives an account of the highly influential forty-year programme of research excavations, from the first explorations in 1950 to the full-scale study of the whole local landscape. The project was transformed from its voluntary status when the whole 15ha site was taken into state guardianship and public funds became available. The project explored the prehistoric and Roman origins of the village, made the first excavations of (successive) peasant houses and a Norman manor house, elucidated the dozen phases of the church, studied the post-desertion farmhouses, and also surveyed the neighbouring villages, both shrunken and surviving. Parts of the site have been marked out and interpreted for visitors and appropriate plantings of vegetation made. |
