Abstract:
Recent archaeological evidence, particularly from Scandinavia, has revised opinion of the early middle ages. The Viking era can now be seen as one of rapid urbanization and economic growth. The development of towns from Kiev to Dublin in the period 700-1000 AD is described with special emphasis on Scandinavia, the Baltic and the North Sea. This area of study is brought up to date with much information being published in English for the first time. Includes a chapter specifically concerning the Vikings in Britain. IH
