Abstract
Archaeology and the Merovingian monastery
Edward James
33 - 55
The continued use of most early monasteries in Gaul makes excavation particularly difficult and few attempts have been made. However the exploration of literary sources can provide clues and allow, for instance, the production of schematic representations of layout as well as the testing of specific hypotheses. Particular attention is paid to Jumièges, Nivelles, Saint-Riquier etc; and the ways in which Merovingian practice resembled or differed from that of the Insular monasteries are discussed.
