The footsteps of an outstanding field archaeologist, N V Quinnell, are traced, via the National Archaeological Record computer, over much of southern England.

Traces the career of an unsung fieldworker who was the first to recognize the antiquity of 'Celtic' fields. His dates are 1874-1940; he was trained by Pitt Rivers in Cranborne Chase, but remained insecure despite his perceptive and analytical work at sites like Cissbury, and his relationships with other workers were poor.

Investigates the questions 'when is an antiquarian report good enough for entry on a sites and monuments record?' and 'when can you place a historical site elsewhere than alleged?', with reference to two examples in the county. The first is the report of a gold hoard made in 14th century, and the second relates to Heynings Priory, whose site may be two miles from its traditional placing.

Five groups of undatable settlements and field systems, remnants of a larger scheme, are presented.

Settlement from 800 BC to AD 43 is very varied, with no 'norm', though it shows a break from Deverel-Rimbury sites. Several case studies show the range: unenclosed, partly-enclosed, and multiple enclosures, and some sites continue for centuries largely unchanged, contrasting with the frequent remodelling of hillforts.

Detailed plans and discussion of two sites, one possibly a siegework of the Anarchy, lying in an area of dispersed settlement.

Reports earthwork survey and documentary search: a late 13th century manor house was much refurbished in mid-16th and later but had vanished by 1650s. Possible garden remains.

A moated site of 12th to 14th century has two sets of fishponds and a deerpark, and is accompanied by another small moat. The layout suggests a pleasance rather than anything more functional. The village was probably shifted northwards, perhaps at the bishop's wish, perhaps in late 13th or 14th century, and not all at once.

Records all known names of individual parts of the fortifications surrounding the Hugh and recommends adoption of a scheme of fixed names, towards an open-air museum of fortifications.
