Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was carried out on several historic buildings on the site of the former glassworks. The site had formerly contained an archaeologically impressive house, together with a suite of ancillary buildings. Over the course of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the residential function of the site became subordinate to the production of glass, which began on the site in the 17th century and continued until 1990. A watching brief was also undertaken following demolition of buildings on the east side of the former hall. The archaeological investigation indicated that several elements of the 18th and 19th century complex survived in situ, and influenced the development of the site plan. However, most of the surviving fabric dated to the early years of the present century. [Au(abr)] |
