Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken across the proposed gravel extraction site. Two archaeological sites, visable on aerial photographs, were known within this area. These probably represented late Iron Age/Roman farmsteads and fields located to exploit the river floodplain resources. The topographical location and presence of numerous similar settlements within the vicinity strongly suggested other sites may have been sealed below alluvial deposits within the study area. The report concluded that, at the time of writing, the extent and date of the archaeological resource within the study area was not known in sufficient detail to determine the impact of the development and that additional information on the archaeological resource would still be required.
