Abstract:
Archaeological and environmental assessments nearby established that the area would have originally comprised primary woodland, with gradual clearance from the Neolithic period onwards. Riverine transgressions, with alternating periods of flooding had resulted in a saltmarsh or wood-fen environment, suggesting that the site would have been intermittently settled during the prehistoric and Roman periods. Rotherhithe emerged into the historical record in the medieval period as a raised island/eyot around St Mary's church, probably as an outlying marshland area of Bermondsey. Piecemeal reclamation and flood protection was likely to have occurred throughout the medieval period, but development did not begin until the late 17th century, with speculative ship-building enterprises which opened up the area to the construction of wharves, yards and warehouses. Cartographic sources demonstrated that the site lay open as gardens and yards until the mid-19th century, when several modest houses and a chapel were erected adjacent to timber yards. The entire site, with most of its surrounding area was completely flattened by bombing during World War II and had remained open since. [Au(abr)]
