Abstract: |
Three trial trenches were excavated in response to a condition upon planning permission for the redevelopment of the site. The results of the field evaluation helped to refine the initial assessment of the archaeological potential of the site, which highlighted the possibility of human and environmental evidence from natural alluvial and peat deposits. There was also limited potential for evidence of medieval land reclamation, drainage or agriculture and for 18th century and later structures. The evaluation revealed a series of fluvially deposited clays and sands, overlying the natural gravel. Although these deposits produced no finds, it was possible that they were deposited as late as the AD first millennium. A 19th century ploughsoil or garden type soil was also recorded, which had been truncated by a Victorian wall. [Au(abr)] |
