Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to an archaeological evaluation carried out in advance of construction and alteration work. The site lay within the historic core of the medieval settlement of Berkhamsted. Berkhamsted was first mentioned in documents dating from as early as the 10th century and was mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle for the year 1066. Excavations in the vicinity had revealed evidence for the 13th /14th-century occupation. The report concluded that the site would have undergone a sequence of change through time of which most would have been relatively superficial. Its present width did not appear to relate to any medieval property formula so the question of burgage boundaries remained uncertain. Nevertheless, it was felt its juxtaposition to Akeman Street and its relationship with the core of the medieval settlement indicated its potential importance. [Au(adp)] |
