Abstract: |
Foundation trenches for an extension to Castle Close were archaeologically excavated in accordance with Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent. One stratified sherd of Roman pottery was recovered. Layers and finds dated to the medieval period were recorded. Some finds were dated to the post-medieval period. A small quantity of early modern and modern finds were recovered. No direct evidence of the Castle Keep was found during the excavation. Modern building activity from the construction of Castle Close and the former garage from the soakaway and from rubbish deposits had disturbed the ground substantially, along with roots from the vegetation in the levelled bank, but the natural or redeposit sand was surprisingly undisturbed across most of the groundwork.
