Abstract:
A desktop study was undertaken to support an application ot the National Heritage Memorial Lottery Fund by the SS Great Britain Project. The study identified that sheds currently occupied by Bristol Glassmakers, museum and offices were constructed around the time of the First World War probably along with the curved brick-built boundary wall at the eastern end of the dock. Structures contemporary with construction of the SS Great Britain included the boundary wall on the south side which showed evidence of building construction associated with the workshops erected in the late 1830's; a structure supporting the two curved and corrugated roofs at the eastern extremity and on the boundary with Gas Ferry Road, following the line of an 'L'-shaped building in which some work in constructing the SS Great Britain took place; and the site of a structure now occupied by the cafe. Other features of interest included a boundary wall of post-1825 construction as evidenced by its absence in Rowbothams picture of the Albion Dock in c1825; the presence of a circular structure of unknown use on open-ground adjacent to the Brunel office; and the suggested presence of part of the 18th century brickyard cutting through the eastern extremity of the Jonathon Hill's site.
