Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of redevelopment, at a site which lay to the south of the former line of a medieval street. Limited archaeological investigations in the immediate vicinity had recorded a Saxo-Norman pit and a pit containing 17th century artefacts, as well as unstratified medieval and 16th-18th century finds. Saxo-Norman strata had also been observed nearby. During excavation of the evaluation trench, a series of 'laid' garden soils were revealed. The lack of building debris within these layers may have attested to long term levelling or terracing of the immediate area for gardens or domestic yards, and not structural purposes. At least one floor surface and a possible second, with a probable associated post hole, was recorded. Pottery recovered from the surfaces suggested a 16th century date. [AIP] |
