Abstract: |
A desk-based appraisal was carried out prior to development and revealed the site had had an uncertain potential of archaeological remains. The site was probably wooded during the prehistoric to medieval periods. During the later medieval period the land was used as common pasture, but probably remained undeveloped. De Gomme's map of 1644 showed a line of parliamentarian siege-works, including a small fort, on or near the site. Although no traces were identified, it may be that they have survived below ground. About half the site retained the original ground profile and had apparently seen little or no intrusive activity. Other areas of the site had been terraced prior to construction of government buildings, built 1939-1958, which would have removed c.0.5-1.5m of natural ground within the building footprints and might have damaged/removed any deposits. As the northwestern part of the site had deeper cuts into the slope, it was likely that any archaeology that may have been present had been removed completely. [Au(adp)] |
