Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a car showroom and garage identified that it occupied the fomer site of the Castle Mills, which had been recorded on the SMR as a mill and dam. The site had been in use as a mill from at least 1193 until the mid-19th century. Part of it was occupied at the time of the assessment by a late 19th century warehouse, which had been built as part of a tannery complex which had replaced the mill. Some of the mill buildings may have been incorporated into the tannery, which had been demolished during the last thirty-five years. The warehouse building did not appear to represent an archaeological monument, and was at most of local importance. However, it was noted that remains of structures relating to the mill could have survived beneath the ground. A small part of the tailrace of the mill, possibly modified by the tannery, had survived to the south of the site. This was probably of 18th century date, and was considered to be of local importance in its truncated state. [Au(abr)] |
