Abstract: |
The archaeological desk-based assessment considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the impact the proposed redevelopment would have. Probable archaeological deposits and features consisted, in summary, of prehistoric features associated with the Thames floodplain alluvium, Saxon features associated with the site's proximity to the Thames and medieval and post-medieval buildings dating from the 13th century onwards. The principle impact of the proposed works would involve the construction of a new basement at a level lower than that of the current basement. This would truncate archaeological deposits and features, which may have survived beneath the existing basement slab. The report concluded that further investigation (field evaluation) may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. [Au(abr)] |
