Abstract:
The southern part of a Roman settlement extended into the area, where it appeared to be largely bounded by a 'catchwater' ditch and included both discrete industrial areas and ranges of what would have been impressive timber buildings suggesting an official function. This corresponds to discrete sub-rectangular cropmark enclosures, which included what was probably a double-ditch droveway that linked southward across the western half of the field. Ditched boundaries on either side of this probably related to a field system. Scattered finds had been identified within this area and substantial quantities of pottery and coins were recovered as well as a roof tile and dressed stone, indicating dense Roman settlement and possible high status buildings. The recovery of worked flints also attested to an earlier prehistoric presence. The investigation also suggests that the connection of Rhee Lake with the Colne Drain channel has wider implications of navigation in the fens. The site's location - effectively isolated on a fen-edge 'island' - suggested that some manner of causeway or bridge crossed the western end of the lake at this point. It was even conceivable that small-scale docking facilities might be preserved within the deeper deposits of the embankment. [Au(adp)]
