Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken to the rear of Tibberton Church of England School on the easement area of a new pipeline for Severn Trent Water, during the removal of overburden and excavation of pipe trenches. The pipeline crosses an area immediately to the south of a crop mark site (HWCM 3931) which had been interpreted as a cursus. On inspection of the stripped area a shallow ditch aligned north to south was exposed. The ditch contained considerable quantities of gravel and an iron nail. This feature was therefore interpreted as a former roadside ditch, possibly on the line of a Droitwich saltway. Documentary and cartographic evidence indicates that this early roadway was in use until the late 18th century, when it was cut by the canal. Further shallow linear features running north to south may have formed part of a strip field system of medieval origin shown on a plan of 1776.[AIP] |
