Abstract:
The last part of the excavation was observed. The site had been utilised for a number of purposes in the past. Although the top 30cm of soil reflected recent changes of use, the lower levels appeared to be a build-up of soil and occupation debris consistent with the use of the yard as an open space, from at least the late medieval period. Between the two were traces of a hard surface of cobbles and sandstone blocks or slabs. Sandstone blocks may have been part of a floor surface or the footings of a building. The footings of the existing stone wall to the west extended to the base of the trench and the sandstone blocks appeared to respect the wall and therefore post date it. The date of the existing wall was not known but appeared to be of some antiquity. The finds observed in the skip were of 18th century and later date, but it was not known from whereabouts in the foundation trenches they came. Two medieval sherds were identified. Archaeological levels clearly extended to beyond the base of the foundation trenches. [Au(abr)]
