Abstract:
The area proposed for development covered approximately 60ha of land currently a quarry and former colliery workings and colliery spoil mounds immediately south of this. The southern boundary of the site was an apparently unquarried area of c.8ha. The assessment indicated that the area around the disused quarry and coal mine had been the scene of human activity since at least the Mesolithic period. There was evidence for settlement of the landscape during the Roman period. Whitwell parish first appeared in documents during the Anglo-Saxon period. By the Norman period, the area seemed to have had quite a substantial population. There was a village at Steetley by the mid 12th century, although Norman period Steetley Chapel may have indicated an earlier date for the settlement. The village became deserted during the post-medieval period and very few traces now survived. During the 19th and 20th centuries virtually the whole of the proposed development area was quarried and mined. This would have had the effect of removing any previously existing archaeology. The only alteration to as yet undisturbed ground would be a highway access from the A619 road, which may affect part of the small area of grass which lay between the road and the quarried area. However, it was believed that this was unlikely to have any impact on significant archaeological remains. [Au(adp)]
