Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment and field evaluation were undertaken in advance of the construction of eight residential dwellings with associated access, landscaping and services. Scattered remains and earthworks of many periods were known across a wide area at Ickleton, including Neolithic material, a substantial Roman villa, Roman field systems to the north, and the site of a former medieval monastery. The available documentary evidence showed that the assessment site had not formerly been part of any built-up area. The assessment site was situated in a field south-west of the historic core of the medieval village. The site lay 350m west of a known Roman villa and c.1km west of the site of a Roman fort and town at Great Chesterford in Essex. The area had long been in agricultural use, and there had been no identified significant previous ground disturbance on the site. Archaeological finds and cropmarks were known from close to the site, confirming that the area had archaeological potential, though no previous remains were known from the site itself. Archaeological field evaluation of the site revealed no archaeological features or finds in the area of proposed development. Topsoil and mature subsoil overlay the natural chalk bedrock. Evidence of recent deep ploughing was revealed. [Au(adp)]
