Abstract: |
The refurbishment of No. 2 Redwell Street revealed a substantial below floor void at the rear of the building. A visual investigation was undertaken, together with a search through the upcast soil from the cleaning out of the hole. It was observed that the lower north side of a well, located immediately to the south of the void, had partially collapsed causing subsidence of the adjacent soils. The rubble infilling and brick capping over the hole suggested that similar subsidence had occurred previously, probably in the 18th or 19th century. In the freestanding sides of the void, several updateable pits were seen in profile, cut through the natural sands. [Au] |
