Abstract: |
Archaeological desk-based assessment of the area of the proposed extension to a Tesco store was undertaken in January-February 1997. The development area lay in the historic core of the town behind the High Street/West Street and Church Street frontages. The assessment indicated that the remains of the back portions of medieval buildings fronting onto these streets could be anticipated, as well as ancillary structures and pits in their yards. In addition Iron Age features and possibly Roman and Saxon remains were to be expected. The extent to which such remains had survived later development was uncertain and recommendations for trial trenching in order to inform a mitigation strategy for the management of any archaeological remains were made.
