Abstract: |
A fluxgate gradiometer survey was undertaken on approximately 2 ha of land. The survey identified significant magnetic variation over the site, and this variability could be resolved into a series of magnetic anomalies that were thought to have related to human activity. Whilst some of the anomalies could be directly associated with modern activities (site boundaries, electricity poles, plough marks etc), others appeared to reflect the presence of sub-surface archaeological features such as rubble pits and ditches, some of the latter appearing to represent property boundaries. Scatters of discrete anomalies across the site attested to the possible presence of ferrous and brick/tile debris. Some of the discrete and morphologically irregular anomalies may have been the result of natural processes. A small number of pottery sherds were noted during the survey. These may have represented the residue of midden spreading, suggesting that the site had been subject to agricultural activity for an extended period of time. [Au(abr)] |
