Abstract:
Acorn Bank dated from the 17th century and had undergone many rebuildings and changes up to the present day. Recent investigations by The National Trust had uncovered a cobbled surface to the southeast of the house. The purpose and date of this feature was unknown, it could have represented part of a range of garden features or a former trackway. The aim of the survey was to locate and identify the nature and extent of the cobbled surface. It was also hoped that anomalies relating to garden features and buildings might be identified. This area was being considered as a possible site of proposed new parking and visitor access to Acorn Bank. This development might damage archaeological deposits. The resistance survey successfully determined the extent of the cobbled surface. It was found to lie within a complex of features that appeared to be mainly due to variations in topography, natural drainage and former ridge and furrow cultivation. Two field drains were detected as well as a series of trenches that could have related to former garden features. However, the latter were poorly defined and many could have been related to modern agriculture. A rectangular anomaly recorded in the western part of the survey area may have indicated the site of a former building, though the interpretation was cautious. [Au(abr)]
