Abstract: |
Observation of earthmoving in connection with improvements to the Market Place was undertaken. An undated ditch of uncertain depth was recorded on the line of the putative Anglo-Saxon defences. Adjacent to Woolworth's, a number of fragments of 13th and 14th century moulded door and window jambs were unearthed. These would have come from the Church of St John known to have been in the vicinity. A fragment of medieval or early post-medieval roof truss, not associated with the church, was recorded some distance away. On the north west corner of the Market Place the remains of stone vaulted cellars, presumably belonging to a demolished property fronting the Market Place, were recorded. [Au(abr)] |
