Abstract: |
A desktop study to assess the archaeological implications of the proposed construction of a new teaching block identified that the site lay within a wider areas rich in palaeolithic and later prehistoric findspots. Palaeolithic artefacts had been found in the playing field immediately to the east of the school buildings and at Grumwell Close adjoining the west side of the school site. Two concentrations of palaeolithic handaxes also had been found, both within 500 metres of the proposal area. Potential Bronze Age feature had been identied to the west and Romano-British occupation to the south and west. To the north beyond Penpole ridge was a Romano-British Villa. A field system lying beneath ridge and furrow some 600 meters to the east of the study area was of probable prehistoric origin. It was suggested that outside the footprint of the school building, little ground disturbance would have taken place with the exception of landscaping works associated with the creation of the playing fields.
