Abstract: |
A third series of gradiometer surveys was carried out on a range of ironworking sites, primarily to provide additional information for the management of these sites. Work was carried out at Springs, Consiton; Harrison Coppice, Coniston; Moor Gill Foot, Coniston; Brown Howe, Coniston; Selside Beck, Coniston; Parkamoor, Coniston; Low Birker, Eskdale; Low Birker Gill, Eskdale. At all of the sites surveyed in 2001, with the exception of Brown Howe, the surveys were successful in mapping spreads of ironworking debris and in the identification of dipolar signals which may have been from in situ ironworking features. As in 2000, the interpretation of the gradiometer surveys was helped considerably by the rapid sketch plans which were made at each site. At Springs and Harrison Coppice surveys made by the Royal Commission and published by English Heritage were particularly useful. However, at both of these sites, significant additional detail was recorded during the present surveys. This emphasised the value of repeated visits and the value of good topographical surveys. The results from the Harrison Coppice in particular showed very clearly the significant additional detail which could be acquired from gradiometer surveys, leading to a much clearer understanding of the development and potential complexity of the site. Nearly all of the sites produced some evidence for orientated dipolar signals, indicating that there were smelting furnaces and smithing hearths surviving in situ. [Au(adp)] |
