Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a shopping centre identified that several parts of it had undergone previous archaeological investigation, yielding evidence of prehistoric, Roman and Saxon date. Of particular significance were the deposits evidencing a Roman roadside settlement and the late Roman/Saxon period. The proposed development in part occupied alluvial deposits of moderate archaeological potential, and in part occupied a gravel island which had seen occupation from the prehistoric period to the present day. It was recommended that further information should be gathered by means of a field evaluation. [Au(adp)] |
