Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the creation of a new car-park for visitors to Castle Neroche, a medieval motte and bailey castle which was a SAM. Excavation had identified four main phases of construction of the earthworks, three of which were medieval. The outermost banks, which were undated, may have represented a bi-vallate Iron Age hillfort. A late Saxon date had also been suggested. During the watching brief, at a site which lay to the south-east of the monument, no archaeological features were identified and no artefacts were recovered. However, a slight hollow thought to have represented quarrying activity was noted to the east of the car-park, in an area which was levelled by the addition of spoil, and was to be used as a picnic area.
