Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the initial stages of the excavation of the foundations of an extension to the village hall at Cholesbury. The area concerned was situated on the possible line of an outer defensive circuit of Cholesbury, an Iron Age Hillfort. A previous trial trench excavation had revealed a small post-medieval feature, probably a ditch or pond. The edge of this feature was revealed during the watching brief and seemed to indicate a pond rather than a ditch feature. No other features were noted. On the basis of this and other recent observations, it was thought unlikely that there was an outer line of defences along the southern side of the hill fort. [Au(adp)] |
