Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated as an archaeological evaluation prior to the proposed residential development of the site. Trench 1, 16.8m long, located a recognisable made surface associated with a cobbled surface, all 19th century, which capped a series of layered fill deposit dating from the 18th or 19th centuries. The only variations within these fill deposits were the actual levels of tip lines within the sections exposed. These fill deposits overlay a more compact dark brown to black silt, interpreted as an agricultural working deposit, possibly pasture or even market gardening. Trench 2, encountered modern fill deposits up to 3m below the ground surface and a 3-4ft wide concrete foundation. The natural gravel was not reached. [Au(adp)] |
