Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed extension within a school yard. Two trenches and three test pits were excavated. A V-shaped ditch filled with chalk and flint rubble which produced post-medieval pottery was observed on the same alignment as the churchyard boundary shown on OD maps. The date of the pottery suggested that the ditch was part of the defences dug by Royalist forces during the English Civil War. The site had been significantly disturbed to the north of the ditch associated with levelling for a tarmac surface. One test pit revealed that archaeological deposits survived to a greater depth to the south of the ditch. [Au(adp)] |
