Abstract:
An evaluation was undertaken in advance of the Yarm Flood Alleviation Scheme. A desk-based assessment had previously identified 14 sites of archaeological interest or areas of archaeological potential that would be affected by the proposed scheme. Of these, Archaeological Sites 4 and 5 were the subjects of this archaeological evaluation. Three evaluation trenches were investigated within Site 4, these being situated within the back gardens of 4, 5 and 6 Westgate. Alluvial silts of medieval or earlier origin were the earliest deposits to be encountered in each case. Subsequently, a medieval ground surface had existed and parts of cut features of medieval origin were recovered both sealed by and cutting this horizon. Post-medieval deposits and features were also recorded underlying modern made-up ground and levelling layers. Investigations within Site 5 were conducted within two evaluation trenches, these being situated within the back gardens of 5 and 9 West Street. These trenches also revealed a sequence of medieval or earlier alluvium overlain by alluvial silts of probable medieval origin. Modern stratigraphy encountered in Site 5 comprised drainage and garden features, dumped material and topsoil. [Au(abr)]
