Abstract:
An excavation was undertaken, following a series of monitoring visits to a site where a section of peat containing worked wood had been exposed within a river bank. The wood had been dated to between the late 15th and the mid-17th centuries AD. In October 1997, it had been observed that the site had suffered considerable damage from erosion since 1993, when sampling had been undertaken. The monitoring visits resulted in the recovery of further pieces of worked wood, revealing the peat section to have been badly undercut and to be in imminent danger of collapse in places. An evaluation of the site was therefore carried out in order to establish its true potential. The work revealed two phases of peat deposition, separated by a thin layer of silty gravel which appeared to have represented a flooding episode. Excavation of the lower peat layer revealed three root boles with a large quantity of interlaced horizontally-laid timbers within a highly organic peat matrix. The upper peat deposit contained a series of driven stakes leading from the end of a drystone wall. A further two days' fieldwork was carried out in an attempt to clarify the relationship between the brushwood layer, the upright stakes and the wall. The extra work did not prove conclusive, as the wall was found to have been preserved to a much greater height than had been originally suspected. An additional seven days' fieldwork was therefore carried out, to expose further the series of upright stakes and stratigraphically earlier deposits which contained possible evidence for a managed hedge. This phase of work demonstrated that the wall had been built over the peat deposit, and that the upright stake fence was contemporary with the wall. [Au(adp)]
