Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of a new hotel and casino. Monitoring of geotechnical test pitting was undertaken, as was the recording of exposed sections of archaeological interest contained within the exposed cellars of demolished buildings. Excavation work in the area had been carried out in connection with a number of developments, including that of the Vaughan Way construction in the basement of the now demolished building in the south-west corner of the proposed development area. Earlier fieldwork indicated that there was the potential for medieval archaeology to have survived within the proposed development area. In addition to the areas recorded in detail, a small section of what was interpreted as a probable garden soil was noted by the City Archaeologist in the south-eastern part of the proposed development area. The available evidence indicated that the archaeology was generally truncated and degraded. If well preserved, the Roman levels would be of national importance. However, it was likely that they would have been degraded to an extent where they could be considered of regional importance. The medieval levels over much of the site had either been removed, or seemed to consist of garden soils. Generally the medieval deposits seemed to be of local to regional importance. It was therefore likely that the impact on medieval and later levels in the are of the proposed basement car part would be high. The impact on Roman and earlier levels would be medium. Outside of the area of the basement car part the impact of the proposed development on the archaeological resource would be negligible to low. [Au(adp)]
